Mac is the career leader in HBP for the Royals. He did know how to get on base.
The "taking-one-for-the-team" aspect of his game added .014 to his career on-base percentage.
It does seem to be a skill since you see the same names over and over, which makes you wonder why crappy hitters like Ross Gload or Tony Pena don't lean into one every now and again.
